From the Convention Hall, you’ll travel to a city made famous by its own namesake, Stone Mountain Park!
Located on 3,200 acres of natural beauty, Stone Mountain Park features a wide variety of fun family activities. Here, you’ll discover “The Largest High Relief Structure in the World”, the Confederate Memorial Carving, depicting 3 Confederate heroes of the Civil War, President Jefferson Davis, General Robert E. Lee, and General Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson.
You will arrive at the Railroad Pavilion, near the base of the mountain where you will be served a Southern Delight Barbeque Buffet Menu consisting of:
- Southern Fried Chicken
- BBQ Chicken
- Hand Pulled-Pork BBQ Sandwiches
- All-Beef Hotdogs (with chili & cheese)
- Vegetarian Baked Beans
- Potato Salad
- Mac & Cheese
- And for dessert, Peach Cobbler, of course!
Have we left anything out? We hope not… you just need to eat to your heart’s content!
Dinner will be accompanied by your choice of sodas (Hint: you’re in Coca-Cola country, so Cokes, Diet Cokes, Sprite, or Dasani Water it is – sorry Pepsi).
So now your tummy is full of good ‘ol BBQ and other goodies, what better time it is than to have a 1:1 RailFan activity! You just need to take a short walk across the street to the Marketplace Depot Train Station where you’ll come aboard a full size diesel locomotive from the 1940s. Equipped with open-air cars, this train will take you on a lively five-mile excursion around the mountain where you can marvel at beautiful views of Stone Mountain and the surrounding landscape.
NOTE: If you think the food line is too long, you can always start-off with the train ride and come back for your barbeque dinner – the RR Pavilion will be open until 9PM.
Okay, you’ve had BBQ, a train ride, what’s next? Well, for those who drove, you can drive around and see other attractions within the park. For others, you can stroll around the Marketplace, Memorial Hall or Crossroads to enjoy SkyHike ad Geyser Towers (where you can play in the spray or stay high & dry).
Just a short walk from Memorial Hall, the Summit Skyride is the rock’s top attraction! This high-speed Swiss cable car provides a stunning view of the Confederate Memorial Carving as it transports guests more than 825 feet above ground to the top of Stone Mountain. From the top, experience amazing views of the Atlanta skyline, the Appalachian Mountains and more (up to 60 miles away)!
As evening rolls around, please make sure to head back to the front of Memorial Hall where a special roped-in area will be designated solely for NGRC2018 conventioneers. Here, you can enjoy another soda and some popcorn, while you wait for the “Laser Show Spectacular” in MountainvisionÒ — which shows state-of-the-art graphics, lasers, lights music and breath-taking fire effects creating multi-dimensional magic on one of the world’s largest outdoor screens… Stone Mountain.
After the laser show, coach bus patrons can board right behind Memorial Hall for the trip back to the Convention Hall.
